"Anne Boleyn is most often remembered by her husband king Henry VII sentencing her to death by be-heading. This painting is meant to take back her narrative. 🫶

Her head appears wrapped in layers of fabric inspired by Tudor court fashion. These garments signify status and beauty. As the fabric tightens, it begins to consume her, shifting from adornment to restraint.

Her pearl crown is slipping and some pearls have already fallen into the water below. Symbolizing the fragility of her favor.

She floats above the water’s surface, representing her rise, visibility, influence, and ambition. But the water beneath her is unavoidable, a reminder of how quickly ascent can turn into downfall.

With progress we can look back at history differently. Figures like Anne Boleyn should not be remembered as immoral or dangerous, but as victims of a society that punished female power. While we have made meaningful progress for women, this narrative still echoes today in quieter resistance to women occupying spaces and roles once denied to them. Female ambition continues to unsettle certain people.
